History of Emsworth Bowling Club

Starting A Bowling Club (July 1989 - May 1990)
( Extracts from "Tempus Fugit 1989 - 1997" )

Members and friends of Emsworth Bowling Club may wonder how this bowling club came alive out of the blue in 1997. The following notes are based on the material in the folder labelled "Tempus Fugit 1989-1997" compiled by our President Jack Brown.

Jack Calls For Bowls Green
'The News' July 25, 1989

The starting point was a letter published in the Emsworth Ratepayers Association News in July 1989 from Jack Brown, which drew attention to the lack of bowling facilities in Emsworth. This was followed up by articles in the ERA News in July and August that year, with supportive comments, notably from Councillor Mrs Tessa Daines.

That same month Jack presented a paper to Councillors Tessa Daines, Tony Berridge & Derek Parker, which set out the case for providing a bowling green in Emsworth. In October 1989 Havant Borough Council voted in favour of adding this to their Capital Works programme.

Then in 1990 there arose a proposal from B.R.Wilson Ltd to provide a pavilion in exchange for land in Horndean Road, but this was held up by discussions on the building specifications.
